Alcova Heights, an acronym for Alexandria County Virginia, (now Arlington County), was named by real estate developer J. Cloyd Byars, who purchased 142 acres from the Columbia Land Company in 1921 and subdivided, creating Azalea Street (Quincy Street), Marconi Avenue (8th Street), Deepwood Avenue (9th Street), Springhill Street (Lincoln Street), Virginia Street (Monroe Street), and Linden Avenue (Oakland Street). The neighborhood is now home to approximately 784 residences. Properties are characterized by their large lot sizes and architectural styles that include farmhouses, Cape Cod, bungalow and Williamsburg.
Alcova Heights offers a 13-acre park on George Mason Drive and the Foreign Service Institute is located on the former Arlington Hall property.
