About Seminary West

Seminary West denotes the neighborhoods west of I-395 within the city limits of Alexandria, Virginia.

Seminary West offers a mix of housing, from townhome and condo communities to single family homes and apartment buildings. There are three senior citizen living centers in the neighborhood, and the 1M square foot Mark Center, an office complex developed for the US Department of Defense and an annex of US Army post Fort Belvoir, is a prominent community feature. The Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College and its Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center are also located in Seminary West.

Seminary West offers two nature preserves; The Winkler Botanical Reserve, a community park, and 50-acre Dora Kelly Nature Park and its Buddy Ford Nature Center. The latter are Alexandria’s largest natural area for strolling, hiking and biking. They also provide programs and exhibits on Alexandria’s human and natural history.

Subdivisions in Seminary West include Hillwood and Stoneridge. The Stonegate development, located along West Braddock Road, is the site of prehistoric settlement ranging from 3,500 to 1,000 B.C., the oldest known inhabited site in Alexandria.

Seminary West area is scheduled to move ahead with the long-planned Beauregard Corridor Plan by developer Monday Properties. Opposition to the redevelopment from a number of local residential groups over neighborhood density concerns and objections to the loss of a large portion of the city’s stock of affordable housing notwithstanding.

The 4.16 acre project site is sited at the northwest corner of the intersection of Seminary Road and North Beauregard Street. The parcel is the eastern-most portion of the Adams Neighborhood, the northern portion is bounded by the Seminary Park Community Association and the Seminary Heights Condominium Association, the eastern boundary of the parcel is Seminary Road, the southern boundary is North Beauregard Street and the western boundary is the parcel of 1900 N. Beauregard Street.
